AUtOtROPhS - ABOUt BiOLOGY 101Autotrophs: organisms that use energy from the sun or energy stored in chemical compounds to manufacture their own nutrients. Also called producers.


Photosynthesis: the process by which plants and some other organisms use light energy to power chemical reactions that convert water and carbon dioxide into oxygen and high-energy carbohydrates such as sugars and starches.


Chemosynthesis:the process by which some organisms use chemical energy to produce carbohydrates.

Heterotrophs: organisms that can't make their own food and must feed on other organisms for energy and nutrients. Also called consumers.


*The most obvious ways that organisms interact w/i communities/ecosystems is by feeding patterns.

Carnivores--a consumer that eats other consumers. Prey will adapt in order to survive

Omnivore--a consumer that eats both producers and consumers.

Detritivore-- organism that feeds on plant and animal remains and other dead matter collectively known as detritus. (Sometimes known as scavengers).

Saprophytes:(Also known as decomposers) organism like fungi and bacteria that break down dead organisms and return the nutrients to the soil.
