BiO GLOSSARY - ABOUt BiOLOGY 101BiO GLOSSARY - ABOUt BiOLOGY 101

A-C
Term
Definition

Arm
supports the tube
Base
the bottom of the microscope, used for support
Biology

the science of life or living matter in all its forms and phenomena, esp. with reference to origin, growth, reproduction, structure, and behavior.
Control Group
serves as a standard by which things can be measured/ compared. (the control group will not change)
Controlled Experiments

an experiment that has only one changing variable
Cytology

the study of cells

D-G
Term

Definition

Dependent Variable
the variable in an experiment that changes
Development

a series of changes an organism undergoes as it matures into an adult
Diaphragm or Iris
The diaphragm has different sized holes and is used to vary the intensity and size of the cone of light that is projected upward into the slide.
Evolution
The study of the ways in which present-day organisms have been produced
Eyepiece Lens
the lens at the top that you look through. They are usually 10X or 15X power
Generalization
made based on evidence gathered
Growth

using materials from the surroundings to make more of oneself

H-L
Term

Definition

Homeostasis
the self-adjusting balance w/i an organism in order to maintain proper conditions when the environment changes.
Hypothesis
is a possible explanation for a set of observations or a tentative answer to a scientific question.
Inductive Conclusion

generalization that summarizes many concurrent observations.

Inference
logical interpretation based on prior knowledge and experience (including observations)

M-Q
Term

Definition

Manipulated/Independent Variable
(X-axis)
the aspect that is changed in an experiment

Metabolism
the combinations of chemical reactions through which an organism builds up or breaks down materials as it carries out its life processes
Objective Lenses

Usually you will find 3 or 4 objective lenses on a microscope. They almost always consist of 4X, 10X, 40X and 100X powers. The shortest lens is the lowest power, the longest one is the lens with the greatest power. The high power objective lenses are retractable (i.e. 40XR). This means that if they hit a slide, the end of the lens will push in (spring loaded) thereby protecting the lens and the slide.

R-Z
Term

Definition

Quanitative

data that involves measuring and is expressed numerically.

Qualitative

data that is descritive but not numerical

Responding Variable
(Y-axis)

any change that results from the manipulation of the independent variable
Revolving Nosepiece or Turret
This is the part that holds two or more objective lenses and can be rotated to easily change power.

Scientific Method

a series of logical steps used to gain knowledge or establish principles
Stage
The flat platform on a microscope where you place your slides.
Taxonomy
The study of how organisms are classified
Tube

Connects the eyepiece to the objective lenses
